A face and neck lift
The face and neck lift is the most frequent procedure. It implies surgical correction of neck aging and also the face from the temples to the jowls. This surgery reshapes the oval of the face and the neck and the chin angle.
A face lift can be carried out as soon as signs of aging appear and the patient feels a real need for their correction.
This procedure can be carried out at the same time as another facial cosmetic procedure: blepharoplasty (for the eyelids), forehead lift (endoscopic forehead lift). It can be completed by medical and surgical therapeutic treatments (laser abrasion, dermabrasion, peels, medical treatment of wrinkles, botulinum toxin injections).
This is a cosmetic surgery procedure, it is not paid for by health insurance.
Aim of the face and neck lift
The aim of the operation is to remedy any sagging or laxity of the skin and muscles to the face (forehead, eyebrows, cheeks, jowls, and the oval facial outline) as well as the neck.
The aim here is not to transform the form and aspect of the face. On the contrary, restoring the different anatomical structures of the face and neck (the skin, the muscles and fat) results in the patient looking as they did some years earlier.
Before the procedure
A usual preoperative check-up is made following your surgeon’s recommendations. An anaesthesiologist will see you in consultation at the latest 48 hours before the operation. No aspirin-based medication should be taken during the 10 days preceding the operation. It is highly recommended to stop smoking at least one month before and one month after the surgery (smoking can delay healing). You must wash your hair the day before the operation and make-up must be thoroughly removed the day of the surgery. You need to fast (neither eat, drink or smoke) 6 hours before the operation.
The procedure
A face-lift can be carried out under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation given by intravenous drip (twilight anaesthesia). A 24 hour hospital stay is usual.
The incision is almost completely hidden in the hair or around the ears.
The procedure last about 2h30.
After the procedure
Suction drains are usually placed to reduce the risks of bruising. They are removed before you go home. The bandage is removed the day after the operation and a lighter one can be placed. Hospitalization usually lasts one day. It is recommended that someone brings you back home. Days after a lift, the following can appear with varying degrees:
- face swelling which disappears during the two first weeks,
- bruising around the neck and the face, usually asymmetrical during about ten days,
- a sensation of painful tightness especially behind the ears,
- a reduction of cheeks and neck sensitivity.
Every surgery can imply risks and complications.
In some rare cases pains can appear, but they are well balanced by the usual pain-killers. Staples and stitches are removed between the 5th and the 15th day.
You can use make up on the 7th day after surgery. You can wash your hair from the 2nd day after the operation. You need to wait 4 to 6 weeks for the first perm or coloration. Several follow-up consultations are organized. After two or three months one can have a good idea of the final result.

What should you do prior to the operation?
- 1 or 2 consultations with your plastic surgeon where he or she will take medical photographs. One consultation with the anaesthesiologist.
- Presentation and signing of the estimate with a 15 days legal delay between the first consultation and the operation.
- Anaesthesia consultation, blood test and mammography, as appropriate.
What does the procedure implies?
- Neuroleptanalgesy or general anaesthesia.
- The procedure lasts between 2 and 3 hours.
- The hospitalization usually lasts one night.
What is the follow-up?
- You may be asked to wear a press-lift.
- Follow up consultation with your plastic surgeon and removal of the stitches 10 days after the operation.
- You will need between 10 and 15+ days of rest after returning home.
- The practice of sport must be discontinued during 1 month and a half.
- You can go back to your professional activities 15 days after surgery.
- Final result 6 months after surgery.

Qu’est-ce qu’un lifting du bas du visage ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Un lifting cervico-facial est une intervention de chirurgie esthétique visant à obtenir un rajeunissement du visage et ce par la mise en tension des muscles et de la peau.
Faut-il une anesthésie générale ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Une anesthésie générale est recommandée pour réaliser un lifting cervico-facial, cependant dans de rares cas chez des patients très motivés on peut proposer une anesthésie locale associée à une sédation. Dans tous les cas l’intervention se fera au bloc opératoire.
Combien de temps reste-t-on à la clinique ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Le temps d’hospitalisation nécessaire est d’une nuit. La sortie a lieu le lendemain de l’intervention.
Est-ce douloureux ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Il n’y a pas vraiment de douleur. Les douleurs sont contrôlées par des antalgiques simples. Cependant, il peut y avoir une sensation de gêne, de « cartonnement » au niveau du visage, qui peut être désagréable. Cette sensation disparaît à environ 15 jours.
Quelles sont les suites post-opératoires d'un lifting cervico facial ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Les suites opératoires classiques d’un lifting cervico-facial sont en général simples. Le pansement est retiré le lendemain de l’intervention. Un « prescript » est mis en place. Un léger œdème et des ecchymoses sont très souvent présents et disparaissent entre 7 à 10 jours dans la majorité des cas.
Y a-t-il des complications possibles ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Comme toute intervention chirurgicale, des complications sont possibles. L’hématome post-opératoire est la complication la plus fréquente bien que rare et bien prise en charge aucune séquelle n’est visible.
Combien de temps après l’intervention pourrais-je travailler ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : La reprise du travail est possible entre 10 et 15 jours après l’intervention.
Où sont placées les cicatrices ? Sont-elles visibles ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Les cicatrices sont placées en général devant l’oreille puis derrière l’oreille et dans les cheveux. Les cicatrices sont quasiment invisibles, quelques mois après l’intervention.
Vais-je me reconnaître après ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Le but du lifting cervico-facial n’est pas une métamorphose du visage mais juste un rajeunissement.
Combien de temps dure l’effet du lifting ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : L’effet rajeunissant d’un lifting dure environ une dizaine d’années.
Faut-il me raser les cheveux avant l’intervention ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Non ! Aucun rasage des cheveux n’est nécessaire pour cette intervention bien sûr.
Combien de temps après l’intervention puis-je aller chez le coiffeur ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : La visite chez le coiffeur après l’intervention est autorisée environ 4 semaines après. Par contre pour réaliser une coloration, il faudra attendre au moins 6 semaines.
Peut-on réaliser dans le même temps une autre intervention du visage ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Oui ! Une autre intervention de chirurgie esthétique de rajeunissement facial peut être proposée en même temps qu’un lifting cervico facial. On peut réaliser notamment une blépharoplastie qui est une chirurgie esthétique des paupières visant à rajeunir le regard, une injection de botox ou toxine botulique, ou une injection de comblement avec de l'acide hyaluronique ( type JUVEDERM) ou de la graisse ( lipofiling)
