Blepharoplasty -- Aesthetic surgical procedures of the eyelids
Blepharoplasty means an aesthetic surgical procedure of the eyelids aiming to correct unsightly aspects, whether due to heredity or age.
This can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids alone, or all four at the same time.
The most common unsightly aspects found are the following:
- Drooping heavy upper eyelids, with a more or less marked skin-fold.
- Lower eyelids which have drooped and shrunk, leading to horizontal wrinkles due to distended skin.
- Bulging fat, responsible for ‘bags under the eyes’ at the lower eyelid level, or sagging upper eyelids.
Before the procedure
A specialised ophthalmologic examination will often be prescribed to rule out any ocular pathology
A preoperative check-up is made following your surgeon’s recommendations.
An anaesthesiologist will see you in consultation at the latest 48 hours before the operation.
No aspirin-based medication should be taken during the 10 days preceding the operation.
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery, it is not paid for by health insurance.
The procedure
The procedure may be carried out on an out-patient basis, in an ambulatory facility, the patient leaves on the same day after a few hours under observation.
Three type of anaesthesia exist:
- Local anaesthesia alone, in this case the eyelids are numbed by an injection given locally (applies to upper eyelids).
- Local anaesthesia with sedation given by intravenous drip (‘twilight’ anaesthesia).
- Standard general anaesthesia, you sleep throughout the procedure (advised for lower eyelids).
The incisions which will form the future scars are concealed in the natural folds of the eyelids. They are drawn on the patient, awake, in the seated position.
After the procedure
During the first few days rest is advised, with no physical strain.
During the recovery period there can be oedema (swelling) and bruising and watering, to a variable degree for each individual patient.
The scars may remain as pinkish lines for the first few weeks, but can be hidden by makeup (usually from the 7th day onward).
The final aspect will not be visible before 3 to 6 months.

Before the procedure
- Medical exams: 2 surgical consultations, 1 consultation with the anaesthesiologist.
- Recommendations: stop smoking 1 month before, stop aspirin-based and anti-inflammatory medication 10 days before the eyelids surgery.
- Signing of the estimate, informed consent and medical photographies.
- Reflection period: 15 days between the first consultation and the surgery.
The procedure
- Anaesthesia: local, neuroleptic or general.
- Duration of the procedure: from 30-45 minutes (2 upper or lower eyelids) to 1h30 (4 eyelids).
- You can return home on the very same day or the day after surgery.
Follow-up and results
- Special care: vitamin A ointment on the scars and the eyes before going to bed for 7 days.
- Removal of the sutures: on the 5th day for the eyelids.
- Desocialisation after the surgery: 3 to 7 days.
- You can go back to your professional activities 14 days after surgery.
- You can go back to your professional activities 3 to 7 days after surgery.
- Final result: 6 months.

Qu’est-ce qu’un lifting ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Un lifting cervico-facial est une intervention de chirurgie esthétique visant à obtenir un rajeunissement du visage et ce par la mise en tension des muscles et de la peau.
Faut-il une anesthésie générale ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Une anesthésie générale est recommandée pour réaliser un lifting cervico-facial, cependant dans de rares cas chez des patients très motivés on peut proposer une anesthésie locale associée à une sédation. Dans tous les cas l’intervention se fera au bloc opératoire.
Combien de temps reste-t-on à la clinique ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Le temps d’hospitalisation nécessaire est d’une nuit. La sortie a lieu le lendemain de l’intervention.
Est-ce douloureux ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Il n’y a pas vraiment de douleur. Les douleurs sont contrôlées par des antalgiques simples. Cependant, il peut y avoir une sensation de gêne, de « cartonnement » au niveau du visage, qui peut être désagréable. Cette sensation disparaît à environ 15 jours.
Quelles sont les suites post-opératoires ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Les suites opératoires classiques d’un lifting cervico-facial sont en général simples. Le pansement est retiré le lendemain de l’intervention. Un « prescript » est mis en place. Un léger œdème et des ecchymoses sont très souvent présents et disparaissent entre 7 à 10 jours dans la majorité des cas.
Y a-t-il des complications possibles ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Comme toute intervention chirurgicale, des complications sont possibles. L’hématome post-opératoire est la complication la plus fréquente bien que rare et bien prise en charge aucune séquelle n’est visible.
Combien de temps après l’intervention pourrais-je travailler ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : La reprise du travail est possible entre 10 et 15 jours après l’intervention.
Où sont placées les cicatrices ? Sont-elles visibles ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Les cicatrices sont placées en général devant l’oreille puis derrière l’oreille et dans les cheveux. Les cicatrices sont quasiment invisibles, quelques mois après l’intervention.
Vais-je me reconnaître après ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Le but du lifting cervico-facial n’est pas une métamorphose du visage mais juste un rajeunissement.
Combien de temps dure l’effet du lifting ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : L’effet rajeunissant d’un lifting dure environ une dizaine d’années.
Faut-il me raser les cheveux avant l’intervention ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Non ! Aucun rasage des cheveux n’est nécessaire pour cette intervention bien sûr.
Combien de temps après l’intervention puis-je aller chez le coiffeur ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : La visite chez le coiffeur après l’intervention est autorisée environ 4 semaines après. Par contre pour réaliser une coloration, il faudra attendre au moins 6 semaines.
Peut-on réaliser dans le même temps une autre intervention du visage ?
Docteur Christelle Santini : Oui ! Une autre intervention de chirurgie de rajeunissement facial peut être proposée en même temps qu’un lifting. On peut réaliser notamment une blépharoplastie qui est une chirurgie des paupières visant à rajeunir le regard.
